How To Air Fry Mozzarella Sticks or Cheese Sticks

This recipe is incredibly simple. I have made frozen mozzarella sticks for years in my oven. I will never use my regular oven again. Using an air fryer is the best way to make gooey mozzarella sticks. Whether you have a small air fryer or a large air fryer, air fryer mozzarella sticks are an incredibly tasty snack.

Place the frozen mozzarella sticks in the air frying basket in a single layer. You do not need to add any spray oil or olive oil as the breading has plenty of oil already.

Air fry at 360 degrees for about 5 minutes. Remove the air fryer basket and flip the cheese sticks using plastic tongs. Continue air frying for an addition 2 minutes or until golden brown.

Make sure to check on your mozzarella sticks every 2-3 minutes to ensure they are not overdone.

Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

How Long Should You Air Fry Frozen Mozzarella Sticks?

Using your air fryer to cook frozen mozzarella sticks will take only a matter of minutes. Depending on the brand of your air fryer along with the brand of frozen mozzarella sticks you purchase, it will take between 5-7 minutes. You should always check on them throughout the cooking process to make sure they are not oozing cheese or burning.

Tips For Cooking The Perfect Frozen Mozzarella Sticks In Air Fryer

Here are a few tips to cooking the perfect frozen air fryer mozzarella stick. To be completely honest, this can be a trial and error recipe. There are so many different brands of air fryers as well as different brands of frozen mozzarella sticks. The cooking times can change based on the thickness of the cheese stick.

  • For best results, make sure to check on your cheese sticks as they cook. Cooking time may be more or less depending on if your air fryer was preheated or if the brand of mozzarella sticks was thick or thin.
  • Do not overlap the cheese sticks. Make sure the frozen mozzarella cheese sticks are in the air frying basket in a single layer.
  • Keep the cheese sticks frozen prior to cooking. Thawing them will cause the breading to be gummy and soggy.
  • You will not need to add additional cooking oil. Most frozen fried foods contain enough oil within the breading already. Using an aerosol cooking spray in your air fryer can also damage the non-stick coatin.
  • If you have any leftover mozzarella stick (Let’s be honest, you won’t), store them in an airtight container

The Best Dips For Frozen Mozzarella Sticks

Dipping fried cheese into anything is going to be delicious. I have a few favorite dipping sauces I recommend trying.

The go to dip for hot mozzarella sticks is marinara sauce. This dip is typically what mozzarella sticks are served with when you order them in a restaurant. My favorite marinara sauce is Prego, however I would go a step further and recommend pizza sauce instead. It tends to have a bit more of a tangy bite than traditional marinara sauce.

Some other favorites are:

  • Ranch dressing
  • Ketchup
  • BBQ sauce
  • Blue Cheese dressing
  • Honey Mustard sauce
  • Hot sauce
  • Thousand Island Dressing
  • Chipotle Ranch dressing
  • Tartar sauce

The Highest Rated Frozen Mozzarella Stick Brands

I have tried many different brands of frozen mozzarella sticks. Most have been quite tasty, however some are thicker than others and have a flakier breading. I most recently bought two different brands from Walmart as I am currently on the search for my favorite brand.

My review of Snapps and Great Value

My review of Snapps Mozzarella sticks: The box was 5 ounces and was only $1. The sticks were very tiny, however the breading on these were actually more like that which you find on fried fish instead of a granular, breadcrumb mixture. The price was definitely appealing. The flavor was so so.

The other brand I purchased was Walmart’s own brand Great Value. This was an 8 ounce box for $1.88. The sticks were larger than Snapps. The breading was the morea granular, bread crumbs type of breading. The cheese leaked from the stick as there did not appear to be a thick coating of breadcrumbs. The taste was not bad but not amazing.

I am still on my search for the perfect frozen mozzarella stick brand.

What brands are other people recommending?

Here is a few of the top rated mozzarella sticks according to Insider.com.

If you like a thicker breading, try Farm Rich Frozen Mozzarella Sticks.

Publix has their own brand of frozen mozzarella sticks. The “breading was nice, lightly layered, salty, and crunchy in a chicken-tender kind of way, however the cheese will most likely leak out”.

Kroger grocery also has their own brand of frozen mozzarella sticks. The breading is fine and seems to encase the cheese better than the Publix brand.

Insider.com stated Walmart’s Great Value brand was the cheapest, however they lacked in breading and had a cheese flavor that was definitely different. I concur with this review.
