Sausage Balls In Air Fryer

I have been making this recipe for years using the oven. I really like the sausage balls crispy so this recipe can take up to an hour to finish in the oven. Though the air fryer can only hold about 14-15 sausage balls at a time, they are ready in 10-15 minutes. Keep reading for tips on how to make sausage balls in air fryer.

Carbalicious or Carb-Free Sausage Balls?

This recipe is made the same whether you are wishing to cut back on carbs or not. If you are looking for the carbalicious sausage ball, use Bisquick Pancake and Baking Mix. If you are looking to limit your carbohydrate intake, cut the amount of Bisquick from 1 cup to a half cup. Are you on the Keto diet or wishing to cut out carbs? Simply substitute almond flour for the Bisquick.

Spray your air fryer with cooking spray of your choice. I used vegetable oil.

Add balls (about 1-2 tablespoons) to the air fryer basket.

Make balls of about 1-2 tablespoons and place them in the air fryer basket

Set the air fryer to 400 degrees.

Air fry the balls for 10 to 15 minutes depending on how crispy you like them. I cooked mine for 15 minutes as I like my sausage balls to be very crispy and slightly firm on the inside.

The smaller the ball, the crispier the air fryer will make it.

Tips To Make The Perfect Air Fryer Sausage Ball

Through much trial and error, I have come up with tips to make the perfect sausage ball.

  • The meat mixture is difficult to fully combine. If you heat the cream cheese and cheddar cheese in the microwave for about 45 seconds before adding the remaining ingredients, it will combine more easily.
Tip: microwave the cream cheese and cheddar chees first. Then add the meat to make it mix easier
  • If you used a hand mixer to combine the ingredients, wet the beaters with water before to prevent the meat mixture from sticking.
  • It is just easier to use your hands than a mixer or spoon to combine the ingredients.
  • When making the sausage balls, the smaller the better. They will crisp and cook more quickly.
  • To keep the meat off the spoon when making the balls, wet the spoon with water.

Should I Use Parchment Paper?

You can use parchment paper for this recipe. If you do not have the pre-cut squares you can cut a piece of parchment paper from the roll to fit your air fryer. Though the sausage balls came out of the fryer more easily when using parchment paper, the grease from the sausage pooled on the paper. This prevented the balls from getting as crispy.

When using parchment paper, the grease does pool

I prefer to not use parchment paper. The sausage balls may stick a bit to the air fryer basket so use cooking spray and generously spray the basket before placing the sausage balls into the basket.

Can a batch be frozen before cooking? If so do you thaw them out before putting in the fryer?

      Hi, Martin!

I thaw out the sausage before making the mixture. I then make the sausage balls at that time. You can freeze the cooked sausage ball. To reheat them, take them out of the freezer and let them defrost. I would recommend putting them into into your air fryer at 400 for about 5 minutes to recrisp them.
