Are you visiting Louisville, Kentucky? Do you need a comprehensive list of attractions in Louisville to thrill not only children but adults as well? Here are my tips to plan a family-friendly weekend in Louisville full of adventure!
Family friendly hotel in Louisville, KY:
There is no shortage of hotel chains within the city, however to save some money look for hotels that are approximately 10 miles outside of downtown Louisville. For a family-friendly hotel, I recommend choosing a Drury Inn and Suites. There are two in Louisville.
We had never stayed at a Drury Inn and Suites. To be honest, I chose this hotel because it was the most reasonable room in the area at the time we traveled to Louisville. Now that I know the value of staying at Drury Inn and Suites, I will attempt to stay at this hotel chain if available.
This is why I recommend it:
- The room was a suite. This included a very large family room, microwave, refrigerator, bathroom and bedroom. It gave us ample room to spread out. My son was able to have his own area and we did too.
- The Drury Inn and Suites provides afternoon popcorn and soda in the lobby.
- There is an included breakfast which includes sausage, a belgian waffle station, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, fruits, and pastries.
- They provide dinner. The Free 5:30 Kickback is a huge cost saving for families!. Dinners include a different menu each night. In addition to food, there is also a bar open serving mixed drinks, wine, and beer for a very low price. A mixed drink was 75 cents!
Things to Do in Louisville, KY:
There are so many family-friendly things to do in Louisville, Kentucky. Here are just a few attractions we experienced while visiting.

- Churchill Downs/Kentucky Derby Museum: The museum is adjacent to Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Derby Museum admission includes a 30 minute walking tour of Churchill Downs Racetrack as well as a 360 degree film named, “The Greatest Race”. In addition, you have access to a self-guided tour of the two-story museum. This experience was very exciting not only for my son, but also for my husband and I.

- The Brown Hotel: The Brown Hotel is a historic hotel in downtown Louisville near Fourth Street Live. Why should you visit? All of the decor is in the Brown is brown and the hotel is full of eclectic charm. Why did we go? In addition to the ambiance, we went to try the famous Hot Brown sandwich which has been served at the Brown Hotel since the 1920’s. This huge sandwich is a mix of Texas Toast, turkey, bacon, cheese and tomatoes which is so large it can be shared.

- The Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory: The tour and museum provides an inside view of the construction of Louisville Slugger bats. You will get to experience the steps in the bat-making process.

- Bourbon distilleries: There a number of bourbon distilleries, all of which are part of the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail, right within Louisville. Can you really bring your kids to distilleries? The answer is yes! Will your kids enjoy the tours. Yes! We have a deal with our son where we do kid stuff in exchange for adult stuff, but many times the adult stuff is enjoyable for kids as well and visa versa.

- The Mega Cavern: The Mega Cavern is a kid’s dream come true. Honestly, it is super fun and exciting for adults, too! We had the most wonderful time. They offer a ropes course, a tour of the underground cave, ziplining, and an electric bike tour underground in a limestone quarry.

In summary…
I highly recommend planning a trip to Louisville. I only covered a fraction of the awesome attractions offered in Louisville, so it is time to go back for another weekend of fun. We truly enjoyed our family-friendly weekend in Louisville.

I keep telling hubby I want to go to Kentucky. The kids will love the Mega Cave and Louisville Slugger Museum I think.
I don’t know much about Louiseville. I was good reading about some the attractions in the city. I quite like the sound of the Mega Cavern. It’s a place I would enjoy exploring. Thanks for sharing.
Mayi,
The Mega Cavern was enjoyable for adults and kids alike!

I am from KY and only live about 1 hour 15 min away from Louisville. I loved reading this through your eyes, and got some great ideas of some things for my own family to do!

I’ve visited America a few times but always stayed around California and NY. Would love to return one day and include Kentury into my list of places to visit. Would love to try that Hot Brown sandwich 🙂
Kristina,
The Hot Brown Sandwich did not disappoint!

We love Louisville! The science museum there is also very much geared towards kiddos and also very fun for adults! The Muhammed Ali Center is another important place to bring kids to learn about Civil Rights.
Cate–
Those are two amazing additions to the list of places to visit while in Louisville!
