Tarcoles River Cruise In Costa Rica

In our previous posts, we have detailed our adventures in Costa Rica. We started our trip in the Arenal Volcano area. After spending several days here, the next destination was Jaco Beach. As we traveled via the EcoTerra Costa Rica bus across the country from La Fortuna to Jaco Beach, we had the opportunity to cruise the Tarcoles River, home of the largest population of crocodiles in the world!

One of the main reasons my family decided on the tour from EcoTerra Costa Rica was because of transportation was included in the price of the package. We wished to visit two locations in Costa Rica. Not knowing our way around a foreign country, the ease of traveling in a tour bus was a huge advantage. We were never more thankful for this decision as when our tour moved from the Arenal Volcano area to Jaco Beach.

Cruising the Tarcoles River

Before making it to Jaco Beach, we had the opportunity to cruise the Tarcoles River. Its claim to fame is that it houses one of the world’s largest crocodile population with about 25 crocodiles living per square kilometer. We were lucky to have an up close look at many crocodiles but also iguanas during our cruise. We were able to view the Carara National Park from the boat.

The tour began with a tractor ride from the visitor center to the river.

18 Foot Crocodile!

Have you ever seen an albino crocodile? More importantly, have you ever met a crocodile named Osama? If you have not, you will on this tour. And you will never forget this 18 foot mammoth! Not only did we get to see him, my son was brave enough to touch his tale! For a boy, this is a thrill of a lifetime!

In summary:

I would highly recommend the tour of the Tarcoles River. It was a calm, yet enjoyable boat ride where we could view crocodiles, iguanas, birds, and other wildlife. The tour ended with a delicious lunch.

Have you traveled to Costa Rica? What was your favorite attraction? Drop me a comment. I’d love to hear from you.
