Family-Friendly Activities in Clearwater Beach, Florida

When visiting Clearwater Beach, Florida there are a host of great family-friendly attractions. Here are just a few of my favorite.

Clearwater Beach

Clearwater is one of the more popular beach towns in Florida so you most definitely need to check out what all the fuss is about. The sand is beautiful and the water is a gorgeous green. When visiting in August, the water is extremely warm boasting temperatures of 93.

Looking to social distance yet enjoy the outdoors, Clearwater Beach is a must do!

Pier 60

Pier 60, Clearwater Beach Florida

Pier 60 features a 1,080-foot fishing pier and recreational park, with a bait house, telescopes and six covered pavilions. The Pier 60 bait house offers a complete line of fishing tackle, T-shirts, souvenirs, drinks and snacks, as well as rental equipment, a full line of bait and a staff that is knowledgeable and eager to assist. The most common fish that can be caught include Spanish mackerel, spotted and silver trout, snook, redfish, tarpon, sheepshead, snappers, flounder, jacks and many more depending on the season. One of the reasons Pier 60 is such a popular spot for anglers is its many lights, which make it ideal for night fishing.

Parents (and kids) will love the well-equipped playground, one of largest beach playgrounds on the Gulf, which provides hours of fun for the little ones. “Sunsets at Pier 60,” a Clearwater Beach tradition, offers a variety of crafts and entertainment from 6 – 9 p.m. each night. The beautiful view of the sunset makes for a perfect way to celebrate the end of the day. The park also features restrooms and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 364 days of the year.”

The boat seating is fully in the sun which can be quite hot. The boat did not go as fast as we thought with the name of Sea Screamer, however when going fast the sea breeze was very refreshing.

Right on Clearwater Beach near Pier 60, you can rent a jet ski. After a brief safety tutorial, my husband and son set out on a 30 minute adventure. The jet ski can hold up to three people.

Best Family-Friendly Restaurants in Clearwater Beach, Florida

After taking in all the things to do in Clearwater this weekend, stop for a bite to eat and a refreshing cocktail at one of the many wonderful restaurants in the area. These are three of my favorite and all three are within walking distance of all there is to see in do in Downtown Clearwater Beach.

Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill

Within walking distance of the houseboat is Frenchy's Rockaway Grill, Clearwater Beach FL

Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill is located right on Clearwater’s white sand beach. There is outdoor seating but we choose to sit indoors for some much needed air conditioning. The summer heat in Florida is brutal especially after walking a few blocks to get to the restaurant.

We loved Frenchy’s food so much, we went twice while on this trip. I would highly recommend Frenchy’s World Famous Grouper sandwich, the Grouper nuggets, the cajun chicken quesadillas, or the onion straws. Grab a frozen Frenchy’s Rum Runner. You will not be disappointed.

Cooters Restaurant and Bar

Within a few blocks of Pier 60 is Cooters Restaurant and Bar, host to a wide variety of menu items from seafood to alligator to chicken wings. I recommend trying the fried gator bites as an appetizer. The breading was outstanding! We loved the Tequila Daytona Style Chicken wings. They were the perfect pairing between savory and sweet with a crispy skin.

Clear Sky Beachside Cafe

The sign outside of the Clear Sky Beachside Cafe brags they are one of the top locations for brunch in the United States. We had to give it a try and we can say the food was delicious and very reasonably priced as well.

In summary

Are you pining for sand between your toes and a cocktail in your hand? Whether you choose to chill on the beach or go for a thrilling ride on a speedboat, there is no shortage of things to do in Clearwater this weekend. Take a break of reality and enjoy sand, surf, sun, all while social distancing!
