Hope After Loss: Bible Verses For Miscarriage

You may be sad to read about 1 in 4 pregnant women lose their pregnancy to miscarriage. This equates to about 1 million pregnancy losses a year. (1) The statistics are devastating. I am sure if you are reading this article you are feeling hopeless, notions of failure as a new parent, and asking why? You are not alone. As a mother who lost my first pregnancy, I went through all the same feelings as you are going through right now. I relied on my faith to remind me there is a bigger picture. This is a list of my favorite Bible verses for miscarriage. May they comfort your broken heart.

My Story Of Loss

Getting pregnant was the obvious next step in our marriage. I had rarely struggled with anything in my life so why would this be any different? I got pregnant almost immediately. After telling my family way too quickly, I went to my twelve week prenatal appointment with the hope of hearing my baby’s heartbeat.

I remember laying there as they tried to find the heartbeat. I heard nothing but thought I was worrying for no reason. Many times, on TV, I witnessed the stress of women’s faces as a nurse attempted to find the heartbeat of their baby. Nothing. Nothing. And then BOOM the heartbeat would start on the monitor. I was sure this was the case. The baby was hiding.

The look on the nurse’s face was concerning but they would tell me nothing. After being sent to another office for an ultrasound, I was told by a callous male physician I had miscarried.

Is this really happening? How can the loss of a child possibly be part of God’s plans for my life? I remember the feeling of loss was unbearable. Why was I so attached to this baby girl or boy that had once lived inside me? Am I crazy for feeling the incredible grief when I had never met this baby and truthfully had only known he or she existed for only about 6 weeks? The stark realization was I had already created a fantasy of the life I would create with my baby in my mind. The hardest thing was feeling as if I was a failure or that I had done something wrong.

You Are Not a Statistic

1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage (1). The statistics are staggering. You are not alone in your grief, you are not a statistic.

Did your friends and family try to comfort you? I heard things like:

This pregnancy was not meant to be. God knew it was not going to be a healthy pregnancy. Your body knew something was wrong. Your baby is in God’s hands.

For those of us who lost our baby in the first trimester, maybe we can wrap our head around one of these reasons. Maybe one of these comments brings us closure. For those who have lost multiple pregnancies, you are reeling and wondering why. For those of you who have lost your baby later in the pregnancy or had to to bury your lifeless baby, my prayers are with you. There are absolutely no words that will comfort you.

Bible Verses For Miscarriage

We, as Christians, are told not to rely on our own understanding, but instead trust in the Lord. This is one of the most difficult things. Faced with uncertainty, I question why bad things happen to good people. The hardest part is trying to let go of control and let God run my daily life. I know, without a doubt, God knows the bigger picture but this does not remove the heartbreak when tragedy strikes.

Rely on God’s word for comfort. These bible verses have given me solace in my time of grief. May they give you much comfort during your heartbreak.

Psalm 6:6-9

“I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping.  My eye wastes away because of grief, it grows weak because of all my foes.  Depart from me, all you workers of evil; for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.  The Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord accepts my prayers.”

Psalm 23:1-4, NLT

The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along the right path, bringing honor to his name.

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid for you are close beside me.

Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

Psalm 34:18

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

Psalm 56:3

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.”

Psalm 116:15

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.”

Psalm 139:13-16

“For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are your works, And my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.”

Proverbs 13:12

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.”

Matthew 7:24-25

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Matthew 10:29-31

“Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. “So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.”

Matthew 11:28-29

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

John 11:32-35

“When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-5, NLT

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.

When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18, NLT

For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!

So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

“And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Isaiah 55:8-11

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”

Jeremiah 29:10-14

“This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”
